From Louise-Anne Guy
I am doing some spring cleaning today & I would like to clear out some art supplies which I do not use. They are:
Faber Castell, Art Grip Aquarell metallic box of 12 – 3 crayons minor use.
Fantasia – 36 premium watercolour pencils in metallic box in mint condition.
A box of Derwent Coloursoft – 72 crayons – only the red and the white have been used half way.
I also have a large cooler full of arts and crafts mixes of all kinds of things – perfect for teachers’ supplies.
If you interested in any of the above please contact me at: l.a.guy@sympatico.ca

From Maureen Dorinda:
In the PAC Update of April 30th it was mentioned that we will be setting up a DVD lending library, I would like to know what you would like in this LIBRARY and seek your recommendations of Pastel Instructors. Please send your suggestions to me, maureen.dorinda@sympatico.ca within the next few weeks as we hope to offer you this service by September.
Here are a few suggestions we have already received from your Executive who met recently.
Richard McKinley, Studio Session and Underpaints,
Margaret Dyer's Painting the figure, Kay Hurley's Negative Painting & Bold Painting,
Maggie Price, Deborah Secor, Liz Haywood-Sullivan, Daniel Greene, Burton Silverman, Colleen Howe..
If you have a DVD in your library you would wish to donate to the cause, we willl gladly accept them. We already have a donation of Denis Jacques, Portrait au Pastel and Horace Champagne's Paintings of Newfoundland.
It seems I have omitted Welcoming two returning PAC Members: Janette O'Neil, Lakefield, Ontario & Heather Laws, Toronto, Ontario. Heather will be assisting Jessie Grant with exhibitions & is now a member of the PAC executive.
From Ruth Rodgers, PAC President:
The PAC executive has now reviewed the results of the members' survey, and we are excited to announce three new initiatives that we are considering in response to your input.
First, we will be exploring the possibility of hosting an annual juried ONLINE exhibition in addition to our current two shows (juried and members). This show will be advertised and marketed just as much as our physical juried show, so it will be a chance to have your work seen by the public, and will include awards in the same way our physical show does. This initiative is designed to offer more opportunity to our members across Canada, and respond to the growing online market for art . Rosemary Simpson, Cathy Cullis and I have formed a small committee to work out the details, but, if our research and planning warrant it, look for this new opportunity to be launched in 2013.
Second, our Membership Coordinator Gloria Burgoin will soon be contacting members in regional areas (for example, Maritimes, Western Canada etc.) to ask for interest in establishing regional groups. Those who express interest and give permission for their e-mail addresses to be shared with other PAC members in their area will be put in touch with each other. The PAC can provide support and advice on setting up regional activities (paint-outs, local shows and workshops etc.) if the regional group wishes to take on such activities, but at least you will be able to connect with other pastel artists in your general area, and perhaps begin an email correspondence to share ideas and support. Along the same idea, we will also issue a call for expressions of interest in setting up "communities of practice" around a shared interest--perhaps portrait/figure painters, animal painters, plein air painters--you tell us what topic you'd like to form a group around, and we'll facilitate the exchange of addresses. By the way, the reason we can't just send out a membership list as we used to do (and let you find people in your area by yourself) is the Privacy Act restrictions--we can no longer share private identifying information with all of our membership without specific permission.
Thirdly, we will be setting up a DVD lending library! Happily, the PAC currently has a small surplus, and we wish to spend this on something which has the potential to benefit all members across the country. DVDs of pastel artists are becoming more available, but they are somewhat expensive, and perhaps you don't necessarily want to watch them more than a few times. So, the PAC plans to invest in a permanent collection of DVDs which will be available (via mail) for one month loans at no cost other than the mailing cost to return the DVD after your loan period is over. How will we ensure that you do return the disc to us? Not that we don't trust all of you...but to borrow a DVD we will require that you send a cheque for the replacement cost of the particular DVD, dated a week or so after your due date. Once your cheque arrives, we'll mail out your DVD. If the disc is returned on time, we tear up the cheque. If it isn't--we buy a new DVD! This brilliant scheme will be administered by our MPAC Coordinator, Maureen Dorinda, who will be sending you a note with further details, asking for your DVD requests as we build our collection.
I hope these new benefits to PAC membership will support the continued growth of our organization and enrich our artistic exchange. I look forward to participating in these exciting new activities!

From Christine Camilleri:
I am very pleased to announce that the Board of Directors of the Federation of Canadian Artists (founded 75 years ago this year by Group of Seven artist Lawren Harris, among others) has voted to include me as a Signature artist. The designation is Associate Member of the FCA or AFCA for short.
Out of the current total membership in the FCA, only 8% hold Signature status.
To see the original paintings that are now showing at Federation Gallery, Granville Island, for the SUCCESS! show visit: http://artists.ca/show/current_exhibition. The show runs to April 1, 2012.
From PAC president Ruth Rodgers
This national landscape painting contest, sponsored by Canada's Arabella magazine (a very high-quality fine arts quarterly with a wide readership), though not inexpensive to enter ($300 for 3 images), could be a great investment for the accomplished artist wanting to expand his/her reach beyond the local. All entries will be posted to the contest website, and the winnings are substantial for the chosen few. However, when you check out the details of the calls for entry, you'll notice one big problem: pastels are NOT included in the accepted media! When I read this, I was shocked, and immediately wrote to the publisher, Brian Usher, protesting their exclusion. After several emails back and forth, in which I explained that current materials and framing practices have addressed concerns about the ability of pastels to be shipped successfully (which was the reason given by his selection committee for their exclusion), I am pleased to report that they have changed their rules, and they will now happily accept pastel works. The rules will be changed on their website within a day or so.
Indeed, the magazine does support work in pastel: PAC signature artist Kelly Dodge is featured in their spring issue! Congratulations, Kelly! Check out the contest and consider entering--the more pastel artists are featured on their contest web page, the more exposure our medium will receive, to the benefit of us all.
